Clumsy Hans

Clumsy Hans

Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairytale, Clumsy Hans, was first published in 1855.

It tells the story of a peasant boy named Hans and his two educated brothers, all vying for the princess’s hand in marriage.
The brothers, confident in their skills and knowledge, receive horses from their father for their journey to the king’s palace. Meanwhile, Clumsy Hans, dismissed by his father, remains at home to tend the farm.
Undeterred, Clumsy Hans longs to woo the princess too. He hops on his trusty goat and sets off on his own adventure. His educated brothers hold little regard for him, but when they get their audience with the princess, they stumble over their words. “No good” the princess exclaims as she turns the suitors away one by one. Clumsy Hans, however, charms the princess with his genuine nature and good humour. She chooses him, and the story ends happily ever after.
