Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910): The Kreutzer Sonata (1889)

Beethoven’s most passionate and virtuosic violin sonata, the Kreutzer Sonata (1803), takes centre stage in this extraordinary musical and theatrical performance, featuring the renowned Danish violinist Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider. This sonata, driven by remarkable power and intensity—even for Beethoven—has inspired countless artists across genres for generations.
Leo Tolstoy's 1889 novella, The Kreutzer Sonata, draws inspiration from Beethoven's fiery music, weaving a harrowing tale of jealousy, violence, and murder. Decades later, in 1923, Leoš Janáček composed his first string quartet, also titled Kreutzer Sonata, deeply influenced by an unrequited love, Tolstoy's dramatic text, and Beethoven's emotional sonata.

This unique performance seamlessly unites Beethoven's sonata, Tolstoy's text, and Janáček's quartet, creating a compelling staged presentation that transcends time and artistic disciplines. Acclaimed German-born actress Kathrin Weisser delivers a condensed version of Tolstoy's novella, dynamically interacting with the musicians. The audience is drawn into the intimate setting of a living room, witnessing a tale of jealousy and obsession unfold. As the betrayed husband descends into despair, the tension escalates, culminating in a climactic scene where the unfaithful wife performs Beethoven's emotional sonata with her violinist lover.

For this ambitious production, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider is joined by the exceptional pianist Kirill Gerstein, a versatile artist celebrated for his boundless curiosity, imagination, and virtuosity. Gerstein effortlessly transitions between Baroque suites, classical concertos, contemporary works, jazz, and cabaret, making him the perfect partner for Szeps-Znaider.

To bring Janáček’s virtuosic quartet to life, the world-renowned Henschel Quartet joins the stage. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, this ensemble is recognized as one of the leading chamber music groups in the world.
We promise an evening of intense drama and chamber music of the highest calibre, where music and storytelling merge to create an unforgettable experience.
