Two musical luminaries join forces at Tivoli as Denmark’s own Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider welcomes his friend and colleague, Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein, for a purely classical program. Both are virtuosos of the highest calibre, renowned for their mastery of their instruments and their unpretentious curiosity for the boundless world of music. Their interpretations of works by Schubert, Brahms, and Kreisler promise to be nothing short of captivating.

Brahms published his Sonata for Violin and Piano in G major at a mature age, undoubtedly discarding earlier attempts in his quest for perfection. The result is indeed a masterpiece—a study in the interplay between two equally important instruments. From the violin’s wistful opening sigh, the sonata envelops the listener in an intimate and familiar atmosphere, with heartwarming melodies flowing like a gentle stream. The work draws its inspiration from Brahms’s song Regenlied (“Rain Song”), and the spirit of rain permeates the piece, offering musical morning dew, playful summer showers, and even a few dramatic thunderclaps.

The concert begins with Schubert’s charming Sonatina in D major, a miniature gem that challenges the performers to restrain their virtuosic prowess. This restraint will be followed by a final flourish of energy and brilliance in a selection of Fritz Kreisler’s finest works for violin and piano, showcasing the full range of their technical and interpretive artistry.

Kirill Gerstein is a rare and multifaceted musician whose repertoire spans everything from Baroque and classical to jazz and cabaret, often incorporating other art forms and disciplines. His boundless curiosity makes him the perfect collaborator for Szeps-Znaider, who himself stands among the world’s elite musicians. Together, they form a dream partnership, bringing unparalleled artistry and synergy to this concert.
Don’t miss the chance to experience these two extraordinary talents in a program that celebrates interplay, musical storytelling, and the sheer beauty of melody.
