Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901): Requiem (1874)
Don’t miss this extraordinary performance of Verdi’s monumental Requiem, where classical music meets the electrifying intensity of a rave. Tivoli Concert Hall transforms into Dante’s Inferno as an expanded Tivoli Copenhagen Phil, four stellar vocal soloists – including the world-renowned Stephen Milling – and a selection of Denmark’s leading chamber choirs unleash the raw power of Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental Requiem. This masterpiece fuses the intense drama of opera with the solemnity of the Catholic Mass for the Dead, creating a work that is at once terrifying, majestic, and deeply intimate.
Words can hardly capture the visceral impact of Verdi’s iconic Dies Irae experienced live. Its ferocious power shakes the soul, immersing us in a vivid musical depiction of Judgment Day. Few compositions, within or beyond classical music, rival its raw intensity. As Verdi unleashes musical chaos, we’re swept through a harrowing soundscape of death and damnation—wild, relentless, and devilishly brilliant. Yet, redemption follows. Luminous major keys and tender musical gestures lift us with angelic harmonies, promising a brighter existence beyond the darkness.
Initially criticised for its dramatic intensity, Verdi’s Requiem is now celebrated for its emotional depth and power. With chorus, soloists, and an augmented symphony orchestra performing at full capacity, this monumental work takes us on a journey from the depths of despair to the heights of redemption. Guiding this transformative experience is the Tivoli Copenhagen Phil’s new principal conductor, Christoph Gedschold, whose acclaimed work with the Leipzig Opera ensures a masterful performance.
