Christmas Fireworks
Tivoli’s pyrotechnician has prepared two evenings of special Christmas fireworks to add to the festive atmosphere of the holiday season.
Experience two very different fireworks shows at Tivoli on December 25th and 26th.
The fireworks are best enjoyed from the area in front of The Open-Air Stage, in front of the Glass Hall entrances, or in front of Nimb.
With Tivoli’s Christmas fireworks, Tivoli wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas!
Fireworks have a long tradition at Tivoli. The garden’s founder, Georg Carstensen, organized performances with “Bengal flames” as a main attraction before Tivoli’s very first season in 1843. Back then, a fireworks factory was located at Stadsgraven, just behind Divan 2. The fireworks were launched from a platform just outside the Garden. This arrangement was necessary because fireworks could not be transported over long distances, but at the same time, they couldn’t be set off in the middle of a crowd due to the lack of safety in the chemicals.
The fireworks took place on special festive evenings, which also featured what was called brilliant illumination. This involved lighting up buildings, trees, and flower beds. It was no simple task, as it required glass containers filled with oil and a small floating wick mounted in various holders. Each lamp had to be lit manually. A night of festive lighting ended with a fireworks display. Tivoli’s first permanent pyrotechnician was Gaëtano Amici, whom Carstensen had invited from Italy.
Fireworks may be canceled in the event of poor visibility or extreme weather conditions.
