Tivoli Ballet Theatre
A unique company in an enchanting setting
The beautiful Pantomime Theatre, dating back to 1874, is not only Tivoli Gardens’ oldest building but also the home of the Tivoli Ballet Theatre. Pantomime performances have been a part of Tivoli since the Gardens opened in 1843, with ballet joining the repertoire in 1911. In 2012, the company was officially named Tivoli Ballet Theatre, and Tivoli Ballet School was established, reflecting Tivoli’s dedication to talent development within the classical arts.
A unique tradition began in 2001 when Denmark’s Queen Margrethe designed her first stage set for the Pantomime Theatre. It was for the ballet adaptation of the fairytale “Love in the Dustbin,” and since then, Queen Margrethe has been the creative force behind sets and costumes for several productions. Most recently, in 2019, the Queen designed the sets for the ballet “The Snow Queen,” with choreography by Yuri Possokhov and music by Oh Land.
Tivoli Ballet Theatre is the only classical ballet company in Denmark besides the Royal Danish Ballet. It consists of 20 dancers, including three character dancers whose special task is to uphold Tivoli Gardens’ unique pantomime tradition. The dancers hail from across the world and are all trained in classical ballet.
In addition to the Pantomime Theatre, Tivoli Ballet Theatre also performs in the Tivoli Concert Hall and on stages outside of Tivoli Gardens.
